2017 Lago Vista Christmas Tree Lighting Brought Out the Best of Community Holiday Spirit

Huge crowds celebrated the beloved 2017 Annual Lago Vista Tree Lighting Celebration this past Friday, December 1st.
Our new City Manager, Josh Ray, and his family opened the evening with introductions. Mayor Ed Tidwell took the stage with City Council members to give the official welcome and lead the countdown to light the Christmas tree. Anticipation grew, and soon crowds lifted their voices, joining the Mayor in the countdown. 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 ....1!  Mayor Tidwell gave the signal, and the tree, along with every Christmas light in the City, lit up at the same time. It was a beautiful sight, topped off by a full moon hanging above it all in the dark night sky.
Everyone enjoyed performances by Northshore Dance Academy (formerly Ain't MisBehavin'), the Hill Country Singers, and the Lago Vista Intermediate School Choir. Between performances, recorded Christmas music continued to fill the cool night air. The emcee, Gene Griffin, kept things rolling and engaged the kids with jokes and surprises.
Several groups kept us warm and well-fed, letting parents have a night off from cooking dinner. Domino's Pizza passed out Parmesan bites. St. Peter's Episcopal Church gave out their delicious homemade cookies. City staffer Stan Heston made hot cocoa. The Lions Club cooked and served hot dogs. And the Cub Scouts were ready with some good ole' popcorn.
Lest we forget the moment when a big fire truck entered the event grounds with lights and great fanfare. The truck stopped, and lo and behold, Santa and Mrs. Claus climbed out! Children jumped with joy, eager to sit with him and whisper their Christmas wishes in his ear. Families got a 2017 keepsake photo of their children sitting with Santa to remember the night. Little kids, and BIG kids, filled out letters to Santa and put them in his magic North Pole mailbox. But when it was time for Santa to leave, he took all the letters with him in his big toy bag. He wanted to make sure they got up to his workshop with no delay!
The Tree Lighting celebration was a delightful event filled with goodwill. We wish you, as well as your friends and family near and far, the most wonderful of holiday seasons.
